Mark O’Neill
President and Chief Executive Officer, Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation
Mark O’Neill was appointed President and CEO of the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (CMCC) in June 2011. A museum professional with over 20 years of experience in the field of arts and culture, Mr. O’Neill joined the CMCC in 2001 as Director, Strategic Planning and Corporate Secretary and has successively assumed increasing responsibilities in order to take on a more prominent leadership role in the Corporation, as Vice-President of Public Affairs and Publishing, and most recently as Director-General of Canada’s military history museum, the Canadian War Museum.
Among his many achievements over the past decade, Mr. O’Neill brought the Museum of Civilization and the War Museum to millions of Canadians coast to coast to coast. He was instrumental in sharing Canada’s rich cultural, social and military history with Canadians and the world, through multiple platforms and exhibitions. Under his leadership, the Canadian War Museum developed exhibitions and educational programs relevant to Canadians, seeing its number of visitors more than triple. In fiscal year 2010/2011 the Museum welcomed close to half a million visitors.
Mr. O’Neill began his career in the public service in 1986, holding various senior management positions within the field of Canadian heritage, including, Director of Cultural Property for the Department of Canadian Heritage and as Secretary of the Canadian Cultural Property Export Review Board.
A native of Toronto, Mr. O’Neill grew up in Ottawa and attended Carleton University, where he studied political science and Canadian studies. He is a community volunteer, and an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa. Mr. O’Neill lives in Ottawa with his wife and two children.
