MODERN DENE SEWING

Woman's winter outfit (parka, mittens, mukluks), made by Jane Dragon, Chipewyan-Métis, Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, 1991.
Canadian Museum of Civilization VI-D-259, VI-D-261, VI-D-260

Within Dene society, specially made clothing signifies bonds of kinship and friendship, and marks important social, cultural, and religious events. Seamstresses are extremely busy in late fall, for it is customary to present family members with gifts of clothing at Christmas. The outfit shown here is modelled after others Jane Dragon made for her daughters for Christmas 1986. The parka is made of duffle with wolf-fur trim, the mittens and mukluks of wolf fur and moosehide.
