This type of heart-lung machine was used in heart surgery in Kingston, Ontario, in the early 1960s. It is another example of the costly new equipment medical advances required.

The reference is to heart transplantation, a feat that seemed about to defeat the grim reaper. Merle Tingley published this cartoon on December 5, 1967, two days after Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first successful transplant in South Africa.
