THE BATTLE FOR AFGHANISTAN, 2005-PRESENT

Map of Kandahar In August 2005, Canadian forces helped the Afghan government extend its authority to Kandahar province. This commitment has led to fierce clashes with Taliban militants.

THE BATTLE OF PANJWAI AND BEYOND

A resurgence of the Taliban in the spring and summer of 2006 led to extensive and sustained combat operations, unlike any seen by Canadian soldiers since the Korean War. The most intense fighting has been in the Panjwai district, twenty-five kilometres from Kandahar, used by insurgents as a staging area for attacks on coalition forces.
