History of the CPM
The Canadian Postal Museum is located on the second floor of the Canadian Museum of Civilization. Founded by Canada Post Corporation in 1971, the CPM became part of the Canadian Museum of Civilization in 1988 and opened its current exhibition space to the public in 1997.
Our Mission
The Canadian Postal Museum’s mission is to conserve and interpret the material heritage of postal communications in Canada and abroad, situating it within the broader context of social communications.
Our Message & Mandate
The museum’s research, collection and exhibition activities aim to address our essential need for communication as social beings and emphasize the important role of the postal system in maintaining these human relationships.
As the only postal museum in Canada, the CPM:
- collects and cares for objects related to postal communications in Canada and around the world
- produces and disseminates research on the history of the post and the world of communications
- delivers exhibitions and public programs that reinforce the importance of the postal system in the lives of Canadians.
