Glenn Gould
Glenn Gould was a child prodigy who lived up to his potential, earning accolades as one of the great pianists of the 20th century. He could read music at age 3 and won international acclaim at 22 with his recording of his signature work, Bach’s Goldberg Variations. He won four Grammies and four Junos—including his induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame—and played with some of the world’s top symphony orchestras before abandoning the stage for the recording studio. Gould was renowned for his eccentricities. He played piano while sitting on a short-legged stool; he hummed audibly during performances; he often wore a coat and gloves on warm summer days. Gould died in 1982, at age 50, in his hometown of Toronto following a massive stroke.
