Added by you! Jean de Brébeuf
Jean de Brébeuf was a Jesuit missionary who lived among the Huron-Wendat near Georgian Bay. Born in Condé-sur-Vire, France, in 1597, he was ordained in 1623 and first sent to New France in 1625, where he ministered among the Huron-Wendat for most of his career. Among Brébeuf’s accomplishments were the creation of a Huron-French dictionary and the translation of the catechism into the Huron language. Along with fellow Jesuits, Brébeuf was blamed for the introduction of infectious disease epidemics which decimated the Huron-Wendat during the 1630s and 1640s. Tortured to death during the Iroquois invasion of Huronia in 1649 and seen as a Catholic martyr, Brébeuf was canonized in 1930. The writings he left behind became invaluable resources for future scholars.
