Added by you! Major James William (“M. J.”) Coldwell

M. J. Coldwell was a founder and long-time leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), a political party formed during the Depression to advance the principles of democratic socialism. A teacher by profession (Major was a given name, not a title), Coldwell was first elected to Parliament in 1935 and led the CCF from 1942 to 1960. He presided over the party’s ascension during the 1940s and its decline in the post-War years, when Liberal governments adopted many of the CCF’s policies. Coldwell lost his seat in 1958 and his party in 1961; the CCF was then reborn as the NDP. Coldwell died in 1974, aged 85.
