Added by you! Emily Carr

Emily Carr is an iconic Canadian painter best known for works that capture the spirit of the Pacific landscape and preserve the images of totem poles found in abandoned Aboriginal communities. Carr struggled for years to break down society’s view that a woman could not be a serious artist. After returning from Paris in 1912, she produced an impressive body of work that combined a modern European style with her fascination of First Nations culture. However, lack of recognition and financial support caused her to stop painting for 15 years. Carr resumed painting at age 57, after an exhibition at Ottawa’s National Gallery brought her into contact with the Group of Seven. After suffering a heart attack, she gave up painting again and embarked on a second career as a writer.
