Added by you! Laura Secord
Laura Secord was an incidental player in the War of 1812 whose name is now used as a synonym for bravery and patriotism. The wife of a Canadian farmer, she had been born in the United States to a family that had remained loyal to the British and relocated to Canada. On the evening of June 21, 1813, a group of American soldiers traveling past her Queenston home demanded that she serve them dinner. Overhearing the Americans’ plans to attack British troops at Beaver Dam, Secord slipped away and trekked 30 kilometers through grueling back roads to warn the British. Subsequently, Caughnawaga and Mohawk warriors working with the British ambushed the Americans before their assault. In 1860, the Prince of Wales recognized Laura Secord’s contribution by presenting her with a gift of £100.
