Samuel de Champlain’s Astrolabe

This brass astrolabe, used for mapmaking and navigation, may have been lost by explorer Samuel de Champlain when portaging near the Ottawa River in 1613. It has the right date – it was manufactured in 1603 – and was found in an area through which we know he travelled. It was discovered by a young farmer while ploughing in 1867 and purchased for the Museum in 1989.
