Shanawdithit was the last known survivor of the Beothuks, the First People of Newfoundland. She died in 1829. Relations between the Beothuk and European settlers were marred by distrust and violence from the beginning. The Beothuk population gradually declined due mainly to disease, starvation and conflict—all of which contributed to the elimination of Shanawdithit’s immediate family. Captured in 1823 by a white trapper, Shanawdithit spent her remaining years as a servant. She died in a St. John’s hospital after a long fight with tuberculosis.
