Sir Arthur Currie
Not a professional soldier, Currie was a militia officer when the First World War broke out in 1914. Once overseas with the first Canadian contingent, he proved a successful and innovative military tactician, despite his unmilitary bearing. Currie commanded the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade at Ypres in 1915 before taking over the 1st Canadian Division. In 1917, after directing the Canadian troops at the battle of Vimy Ridge, he was given command of the entire Canadian Corps. Considered one of the most capable Allied commanders on the Western Front, Currie participated in every major battle waged by the Canadians. He was the first Canadian to rise to the rank of full general, and he consistently fought to keep the Canadian contingent together as a unified fighting force.
