Thanadelthur
What little is known about this Chipewyan woman from northern Manitoba relates to her final four years of life, which ended in 1717. Written records and oral history tell of a young woman captured and enslaved by Cree attackers in 1713. Escaping after a year, Thanadelthur travelled for months through the wilderness before finding refuge at York Factory, a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post. There she worked as a translator and intermediary, bravely brokering peace between Chipewyans and Crees and helping to expand the fur trade.
