The First Canadian Postage Stamp

In 1851, Great Britain gave the Province of Canada responsibility for its own postal system. That decision was the result of years of negotiation, and was part of Great Britain’s response to a colony evolving towards self-government. The first Canadian postage stamp was issued on April 23, 1851, making this new responsibility official.
