Jean-François Lozier

Dr. Lozier has been curator of Canadian History to 1800 at the Museum since February 2011 and is currently working on updating the Virtual Museum of New France.

His wide-ranging research interests touch on the social, cultural, political and military history of all the North American colonies in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He is particularly interested in the relations between French and Aboriginal peoples during that period from an ethno-historical perspective, that is, one combining the methods and sources of history and anthropology.

His doctoral research dealt with the founding and early development of mission villages in the St. Lawrence Valley. His next major project will be along the same lines, taking a fresh look at the famous Lachine massacre of 1689.

Dr. Lozier holds a BA and an MA in History from the University of Ottawa and completed his PhD on the same subject at the University of Toronto in 2012. He has received many Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada scholarships during his studies and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Historical Association from 2008 to 2010.
