Mauro Peressini

Since joining the Museum’s staff in 1992, Dr. Peressini’s research has dealt mainly with Canadians of Italian, Portuguese and Latin American origin. He was the Curator who conceived and developed the exhibition Presenza: A New Look at Italian-Canadian Heritage, and was the Museum’s Curator for the special exhibitions Pompeii and The Greeks. Dr. Peressini is the author, co-author or editor of several books, including The Mediterranean Reconsidered: Representations, Emergences, Recompositions; and Migration, famille et communauté: les Italians du Frioul à Montréal. He is also a frequent contributor to scholarly journals, writing on topics that range from the role of religion among Italian immigrants to the depiction of women in Canadian folk art.

Born in Montréal, Dr. Peressini spent much of his early career in field work, participating in several archaeological excavations in the State of Guerrero, Mexico between 1978 and 1987. He obtained his PhD from the Department of Anthropology at l’Université de Montréal.
