Norman Vorano

Since joining the Museum in 2005, Dr. Vorano has carried out research across the Canadian Arctic on 20th century Inuit Art and visual culture of the North. He is currently writing a book on the development of Canadian Inuit art in the mid-20th century, focusing on the role played by Inuit artists and key “cultural brokers” in helping to make Inuit art an internationally acclaimed fine art form. In 2011, he curated the travelling exhibition Inuit Prints: Japanese Inspiration, exploring the link between the renowned Cape Dorset print studio and Japanese printmaking, and authored a book on the same subject. Dr. Vorano also curated the online exhibition Cape Dorset Prints, which explores the history of printmaking in Cape Dorset, and presents to the public the Museum’s incomparable collection of Inuit prints. His other areas of interest include museum studies, globalization, modernism and visual studies.  

Dr. Vorano is on the Board of the Native American Art Studies Association and has been on the Editorial Board of the Inuit Art Quarterly. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society.

Born in Northern Ontario, Dr. Vorano studied fine arts at York University in Toronto and received a PhD in the Interdisciplinary Program in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York.
