Sheldon Posen

Dr. Posen’s exhibitions and publications have covered such subjects as the children’s folk music industry in Canada, French-English macaronic song in Quebec, Canadian landscape art, the legendary hockey star Maurice Richard, the country’s weathervanes and windmills, and Canadian cigar boxes 1880–1930. 

 Before joining the Museum’s staff, Dr. Posen was an independent consulting folklorist. He conducted field and archival research for a wide variety of clients, including the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City, the Glenbow Museum in Calgary and the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

His research subjects have included the traditional culture of the Ottawa Valley Irish, Inuit hockey players in the Canadian North and the Newfoundland fishery. He has used that research for a variety projects, including exhibitions, an award-winning video (about ice fishing on Lake Champlain), a book (on an Ottawa Valley traditional song), and a music festival (Toronto’s Mariposa).

Dr. Posen has an MA from Memorial University of Newfoundland and a PhD in Folklore from the University of Pennsylvania.
