Yves Monette
Curator, Quebec Archaeology
The main focus of Dr. Monette’s research is the material culture of the French regime—the period between 1534 and 1763, when France administered its colony in North America. Through various scientific techniques and methods of analysis, such as geochemistry and microscopy, he seeks to determine the origins of artifacts, and hence, their distribution and exchange. Of particular interest to Dr. Monette are ceramics made in southern Quebec or imported from France, and artifacts containing lead. He has worked on a number of national and international research projects, and is associated with research groups specializing in archaeological science at l’Université de Montréal and l’Université Laval.
Dr. Monette holds a BA in History as well as an MA and a PhD in Archaeology from l’Université Laval. He was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Fonds québécois de la recherche sur la société et la culture to pursue geochemical sourcetracing of archaeological materials at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique – Eau, Terre, Environnement (INRS-ETE)
