Canadian Postal Museum

The mandate of the Canadian Postal Museum (CPM) is to preserve as a public trust the heritage of Canadian postal communication and objects representative of the international postal heritage. The subject focus of the collection is postal communication while the scope is multidisciplinary, covering ancient and modern history, science and technology, philately, fine art, architecture, folk art and the decorative arts. In addition to preserving and developing the material culture collection, the Museum makes postal heritage accessible to the public via Museum programs including exhibits, publications, educational and cultural activities.

The role of the CPM in the Aboriginal Training Program may contribute to research and programming.

General Objectives

The section will focus on providing:

  • familiarity with the Canadian Postal Museum artifact collection and how it is used for educational programming and research
  • exposure to aspects of planning and implementing educational programs and exhibitions
  • knowledge regarding planning and implementation of outreach programs, including new technology
  • awareness of methods and procedures of historical research
  • an overview of the development, management and conservation of a museum collection.

Specific Learning Outcomes

These objectives will be reached through assigned tasks and projects which may include the following skills or procedures.

The intern may:

  • apply educational theories and methods to the development and implementation of interpretative programming and exhibitions
  • organize and plan activities for the public
  • develop educational programming to supplement specific exhibits
  • organize and develop outreach material for new technology application
  • become familiar with the CPM collection and how it is used for programming
  • experience animating a particular theme
  • utilize historical and material research methods
  • apply research theories and methods to collection development.
