This manual is designed to provide a general understanding of the Atlantic Canada Newspaper Survey (ACNS) database and its structure. The ACNS project was designed to provide a machine-readable database of goods and services offered for sale in important east coast regional newspapers before 1900. This newspaper research database has as its focus nine broad categories of commodities based upon Statistics Canada’s “Trade of Canada Commodity Classification.” See COMMODITY CATEGORIES AND RELATED SUB-CATEGORIES.
In Nova Scotia the focus was slightly expanded to include land transactions and public service and legal announcements appearing before 1800.
This project is a collaborative initiative which has involved various federal and provincial departments and agencies including:
- Canadian Museum of Civilization, Hull
- Canadian Heritage Information Network, Hull
- Newfoundland Museum, St. John’s
- New Brunswick Museum, Saint John
- Nova Scotia Museum, Halifax
- Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation, Charlottetown
